Workday Senior Security Engineer

UW Information Technology has an outstanding opportunity for Workday Senior Security Engineer to join their team.

About this Opportunity

Reporting to Technology Manager, the Workday Senior Security Engineer is responsible for the security of UW institutional Finance, HR, and Payroll processes and data. The position is highly technical as well as cross-cutting, requiring coordination and liaison to internal team roles as well as external groups to ensure secure and efficient business workflows for UW.

Key Responsibilities

Solution Design and Development (40%)

  • Provide options for robust design, development and implementation of Workday Security functionality as it relates to key Business process, report and integration design.
  • Conduct systems analysis, identification of enhancement opportunities for implementation of complex Workday security configuration changes.
  • Analyze evolving Workday Security functionality, remaining cognizant of system inter-dependencies and associated business process and reporting implications.
  • Analyze complex business problems and processes to identify functional and non-functional solutions supporting the core Security needs of the University.

Advanced Technical Support and End-user Consulting (35%):

  • Act as a Workday security professional, and coordinate closely with technically complex partner organizations across the UW enterprise to ensure data is accessed in a way that meets the UW business needs.
  • Collaborate and partner with multiple customer stakeholder groups across the organization including project team members.
  • Work closely with system stakeholders across the HCM, Benefits, Finance and Payroll spectrum.
  • Work effectively in a large team environment and effectively learn and apply program methods and approaches.
  • Communicate security and access processes, problems, and solutions in a simple and accurate manner.

Documentation, Training, & Communication (25%):

  • Maintain thorough documentation on Security routine procedure and protocol transparent internally within the team as well as within UW Information Technology.
  • Support security training for Workday Technical Application Management Team.
  • Support Workday customer training activities by answering questions and giving information to the training team.
  • Support communication of security enhancements/updates and known issues.
  • Stay up-to-date on information technology trends and security standards CIS, NIST, ISO

Required Qualifications

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Science, Computer Science or related field or experience.
  • Four years of experience performing progressively more complex and responsible tasks involving security framework development and support of enterprise applications and services.
  • Knowledge of information security, privacy frameworks, and compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of business process designs, internal control risk management and IT controls involving Workday or similar ERP systems.
  • Ability to understand business and technical design considerations and facilitate problem-solving/issue resolution in the context of a customer service framework.
  • Demonstrated understanding of how security requirements have implications for data reporting and integration processes.
  • Ability to create and assimilate business process documentation.
  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.
  • Experience supporting system testing and/or data validation activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a SaaS infrastructure, system security access analysis, and/or systems analyst role
  • Familiarity with core identity management concepts, capabilities, and supporting business practices for identity registration, proofing, record matching, lifecycle management, credential assignment, and authentication.
  • Experience with single sign-on (SSO) and identity federation protocols and technologies (SAML, OIDC).
  • Experience managing API Clients and X.509 certificates in a SaaS environment.
  • Familiarity integrating IT applications with IAM services, APIs, institutional information, and/or infrastructure.
  • Workday Security Pro-Certification
  • Familiarity with NIST cybersecurity standards and Center for Internet Security (CIS) controls.
  • Experience with project or task tracking tools (e.g. JIRA, Trello, Asana).
  • Experience with SOC Type 2 reports, major audit, accounting, or consulting firm.
  • Experience in higher education and research communities.

About the Team

UWIT is the University of Washington’s central IT organization, supporting all three campuses, UW medical centers, and global research. We partner across the University to power teaching, learning, innovation, and discovery. We are here to serve UW. The Workday Security Team within UW-IT, manages the technical controls that determine who can access Workday data and what actions they can perform. The team maintains security roles and permissions, protects sensitive information, and works with system owners and data stewards to support access requests, compliance, and issue resolution.

More specifically this team:

  • Work across Workday functional areas, and with partner organizations to directly support the evolving security design of UW’s Workday HCM and Financials modules.
  • Troubleshoot complex security issues, develop business requirements and contribute robust security design options to projects that change the Workday feature sets and business processes.
  • Support critical infrastructure and IT services for account and credential management, authentication, sign-on, access control and administration and participation in global security federations, all in support of institutional finance, HR, and Payroll needs for identity, privacy, security, accountability, transparency, efficiency, and cost-effective management of institutional risk.
